Günter Braun Journal and Letters

Journal/Logbook kept by Günter Braun from 1941-1943 while serving aboard a German minesweeper (Sperrbrecher 1) and 2 U-boats (U-593 and U-436).

The journal consists of two main parts:
1) Routine entries from January 1, 1941 to April 28, 1942 in Braun’s hand, which include photos on board Sperrbrecher 1 and while on vacation in Paris, France

2) entries in his father’s hand that begin in 1942, and cover the last year of Braun’s service in the German Navy.

Interspersed in part 2 are letters that Braun had sent to his parents, complete with postmarked envelopes.

According to information provided by the donor, the journal was among the items returned to Braun’s parents by the Navy after his death. The entries include excerpts from the enclosed letters as well as his father’s recollections of conversations that he had with his son while on leave.

Braun, Günter, d. 1943.
