Journal, January 1, 1852 – January 2, 1855


Daniel H. Taber and Captain Fisher traveled aboard the ship Alice Mandell (built 1851, Rochester, New York) from New Bedford to whaling grounds in the Pacific and Arctic Oceans.

Home port: New Bedford, Massachusetts.

- Valparaiso Harbor (February 11, 1852)
- Maui harbor (March 31, 1852)
- Oahu (April 4, 1852)
- Oahu (October 18, 1852)
- Hauhin, Society Islands.

Alice Mandell log began January 1, 1852 in Gulf of St. Lawrence in Canadian Maritimes. Followed southerly course to straits of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego arriving on January 10; Southwest of Valparaiso, Chile on January 31; Hawaiian Islands on March 26th.

Whaling in Bering Sea May 7 – June 24th; gap in journal until December 5 in Society Iles and Polynesia; April 26th – September 12th whaling north of 50° latitude September 15, 1853- sailed south, arrived Honolulu, Hawaii October 16, 1853.

December 1, 1853 left Honolulu south to Ascension Island; December 13, 1853 first reference to Alice Mandell as another ship; December 14- January 26, 1854 sailed in company with Alice Mandell lying in port of ascension.

Daniel H. Taber was on ship with his wife and their two daughters, Asenath and Emily. (Asenath’s diary is Logbook 002 and Mrs. Taber’s journal is Logbook 003.)
