To make:

the L. knot
is too low.

Make two similar overhand knots inter-
laced, as in fig 1. Turn the left knot
round as in fig 2, & pull out bights
right & left as indicated. Then equa-
lise the loops & tighten. (* >)
Uses: An ornamental knot. In Japan
a tassel or tassels are attached to the bottom
ends, and the arrangement is hung in
girls’ hair, under lanterns, and in fact
almost wherever it can be introduced.§ Some-
times the top loop is represented by loose
ends; and ^or on two long strings a succession
