To make : There are many ways of making
this knot, according to the thickness of the
cord or rope employed, to the direction of the
strain, tothe position of the knot in relation
to the rope or ropes on which it is made, &
so forth. The simplest case to consider is
that of two short pieces of string to
be so joined that the four ends shall all
bear an equal strain ( as is the case happens;
for instance, with the knots at the corners
of a net mesh.) Proceed as follows : -
(1) Make bights on both pieces of string :
put one bight a little way through the
other ; take the bottom part of the enclosing
