The binding power of the knot in this
condition is enormous. Nevertheless, in
all forms of the knot, b should not
be strained unnecessarily from d, and when convenient,
a should be strained from c. In making
bowlines these two conditions are always
observed, & no other need be regarded as
Essential, ^since only one piece of rope or cord is used. But where, as in bending
small rope to big by a bull loop on the
small rope, the effect of the grip ^on the lion loop is ne-
cessarily small, then the strain should
certainly be on a. ^(pl. coll,2 [?] figs[?] lines. A2.) If in such a case it
is on c, the knot will may resolve itself into
a running knot round bd (the big rope)
