cyclopedie. (Its use being
to hoist or support a man.)
Bowline Knot.^out[?] "Chaise"
Other names: (cf. p.3.) cf vol 6.115.
Figured: p1, cols i & ii. In these figures
a or c forms the standing part & b or d
the other. The knot is on a single rope.
According to the received theory, in p1. lines 1 &
2, a should be the standing part; in lines
3 & 4, c. (See ii 44-5. & cf ii 46-7.)
To make: As this knot is nearly al-
ways made on a free cord, it is well to
adhere as far as possible to one method of making it.
make it always in the same manner. The
following is as good as any:- (p114, 206 infra).
The figures are lettered for com-
parison with those on p.1. This
will be found in line 4. col 2.,
the dotted lines from a to d being
filled in.
