* The Carrick Bend is a knot of 8 crossings.
It is stated to have been used as the
true love knot of Henry VIII & Anne Boleyn.
(see i.78.)
It may be represented thus,
among other ways :-

In this form it will be recognised as the
foundation of many elaborate designs,
architectural & decorative, as well as
of most of the more intricate ornamental
knots. Cf pp.89. If a rod were pushed up
through the centre of the above figure the
cord would appear to be ^ lie in a 3 strand plait
round it, [ though ? in reality it would not
be one, since it could not be formed by
three rings interlaced. See 2.i.p160 & ii. p146.
