  • the bight is in point of fact, an

essential part of the working knot, which would re-
main even if the bight or part of
the rope immediately below the knot,
were cut through. The real binding power
of the knot is exactly the same as in
the Bull Loop Hitch (i.273), and as this
is not a mathematical book no attempt need
be made here to follow [  ?? ] on other charac-
teristics which might appear artificially to
plain men.
It is a Single Crown (p 140)
upside down, & the two combined [  ???] much
as two dissimilar overhands do in mutually
securing one another in the reef knot.
