(3) Keeping all loose, put a down at
the back through the under bight c!
(4) Letting a hang straight down, pass
the part of the under bight c
the upper to the right of a up through
the upper bight d, and put a up through
the bight of c thus formed above d.
(5) Letting a lie straight up, pass that
part of the upper bight c
the lower bight d to the right of a down
through the lower bight d, & pass a down
through the lower bight thus formed with c.
(6) Pass a up alongside b & through the
bight from which b issues as in fig 1. A
loose three strand plait is now round
the rope. (7) Equalise it & let a follow
b round or vise versa until the plait
is double, treble, quadruple, or manifold,
& it is quite tight & impossible to make
it tighter. * After 5, if it appears de-
[r?]rable, repeat 4 & 5 (not 4 only) & then
proceed to 6 & 7. Tuck in the ends.
