The outer ring may be 2" diameter
up to S3; then 2 1/4 for S4; 2 3/8 for S5 & S6
& so on. If compasses are used, as they
often may be, great confusion is likely
to result unless a trial figure is drawn
first with the compasses. (See p 244 for
melancholy examples &
p 252. S6 5b/25c pp 246-7 &254-5 for a
good specimens of hand drawing. The usual
mistake is to draw the circles too close
together when the bights are few & too far apart when
they are many..
This It is only possible to draw them
very close in Sn 1b/.c or in Sn nb/.c, when
compasses can always be used with ease.)
[Note in pencil: Note. The diagrams consist of a line travelling
thus round a centre [Diagram] making
full loops all the way.
These loops go to the circumference once each forming
the bights until b=2n (e.g. b=nS4,8) after
which each loop goes twice and forms 2 bights. When
b=3n, they go 3 times & so on]
