Long Splice (Shroud Laid ropes.)
To make: Proceed on the same principle as
with hawsers (p.163.) ^having first cut away the heart from the shroud parts, Supposing the strands
to be crutched as in Fig 1, unlay ii twelve
times the circumference (ot thereabouts) and
replace it with vii. Unlay iv halfway
to the point where i & vii meet, & replace
it with v. Unlay vi to
a distance from the same extent
i & viii about equal to th
in the reverse direction the iv was unlaid,
replacing it with iii. ^fig 2. Finish as before. The
strand to fill a vacant space is found by the
rule on p 163. Unlay
alternate, not adjacent ^every other strand of
each rope, not adjacent ones.
