at once. The splice, ^should then
be ^made & served over with spun yarn, ^and if desired,
the whole eye with it;
the splice may be whipped to hide
it and protect it a little. *
The whole process is very simple
and easy if the following rules
^for the commencement are remembered:-
(1) Each unlaid strand passes down-
wards at right angles to a different
laid up strand.
(2) If 1 is taken down
the strand ^next above 1 goes down under
the strand ^next above 5, and the strand
the strand two above 5; but
(3) this description is only for
the purpose of identifying the laid
up strands, as all the unlaid ones
go down under them at the same
