It is possible to half knot and
finish off at the stage depicted in
fig 3
By this method it is possible to lay
the grommet harder than the original rope,
in which case the grommet
^If a grommet is whipped (hitched) round, it will tend to
coil on itself against the lay of the
rope ^hitching - a result not to be desired. Thus
a grommet made in accordance with the
figures & hitched round with twine put on
with a hawser lay, readily curled up into
the following shape:-
[diagram] If therefore, as often happens,
a grommet when made is
inclined to twist, hitching
round one way or the
other may help to cure
the defect.
Before hitching a
grommet be sure that there are no pro-
jections from knots or depressions, as the
hitching will probably emphasise them
