Long Splice for Hawser & Shroud-laid ropes.
Proceed as on p 171, but when two
of the three hawser strands have
been replace, divide the remaining
one into two halves, or into a
third & two thirds: treat these portions
as whole strands, but if divided
unequally, let the smaller portion not
be unlaid, but correspond to i or viii
in fig 2. p 171 according as the left or
right hand rope is the hawser.
The method of treating the
shroud as a hawser & proceeding
as on p 163, tucking away one
of the four strands is slovenly.
The heart of the shroud is usually
cut out. (see p.219.)
