(apart from stretching) will be 11 strand
widths. (here alluded to as "strands"
for brevity.)
Take any point A on
the rope and let A be the centre of
the additional length it is desired to
to insert. Suppose A to fall on strand
no 3 (as fig 1); then d is a point on
1 immediately to the left of A and
e a point on 2 immediately to the
right of A. It is to these points,
d & e that 1 & 2 will have to be
unlaid, 1 being cut at some point
B to the right of A, and 2 at a
point C to the left of A. (fig 1.)
The strands will eventually be
knotted &c. as in a long splice (p 163)
and it is well to allow for 4 turns
being unlaid at the end of each
severed part of a strand for this pur-
pose. As the long strands are to be
united to the middle ones, and will
be in the same lay, the four turns
