who have copied Burney , or some
common authority, are open to the
same criticism ; and none of them,
Burney not excepted, appear to under-
stand the details of the process they
endeavour to describe. ^* The latter re-
marks : "This is one of the neatest oper-
ations that can be performed by a
sailmaker ;" and then adds significantly,
"but if not laid up right the first
time , it becomes very troublesome , and
generally ends in failure."
Characteristics : A kind on long splice,
which, in the opinion of the writer , serves
no useful purpose unless to pass the
time away , when becalmed on the high
seas, for which purpose^to which end it is admirably adapted.
