Other names : Made Eye (^Kipping .75 Steel); Artificial

To make : There are many ways of
making this eye which agree in prin-
ciple but differ in detail. Steels' di-
^p182 rections (1794) describe the method then
in use in the Royal Navy as follows:-
"Open the end of a rope ; then open
the yarns, dividing them into two parts,
and laying one part over the other ;
or place them together, one part in
the other : then well marl, parcel &
^75 serve them together. " Kipping (1857) re-
commends bringing the yarns together round
