cast rope, in this case of ^ to 3 ins in
circumference.
A short ^incomplete account of the eye will
be found in Burney and an elaborate
^but obscure one in Bushell. The following details
are founded on the remarks of these
two writers authorities, the writer ^never having
never helped to make the eye or seen
it made.
With cables of 11" or less put a
whipping on 9 ft from the end, and
for every extra 3" or part of 3" in the
circumference of a cable increase the
distance of the whipping from the
end by 1 ft. Lash the cable in a
convenient position & unlay the three strands to the whipping. Haul the
turns out of the strands & beat them
thoroughly with a commander (a mallet.)
