Mariners’ Splice (for cable)
To make: This is a long-splice,
but instead of knotting the 6 ropes
(corresponding to the 6 strands of the
hawser long-splice iii.p. ) the
ropes are themselves unlaid & crutched
together where the knots would be, and
their strands long-spliced in the ordi-
nary way. A practical difficulty arises
in unlaying & replacing strands of
ropes which are themselves laid up.
This can be surmounted by putting on
good stops round the crutchings (leaving
out the strand to be first unlaid); then
forcing the rope being dealt with away
from the other two with a fid or
spike, and being content with 3 knots
pretty close together for each of the
three long-splices.
