Drawing Splice. (for cables) Steel. i. 185.
To make: Unlay three fathoms
of each cable end, crutch & short
splice the ropes as though they were
hawser strands. Cut the ends down^of
the ropes down to 1 fathom; taper these
ends very gradually; point them in
the centre and whip round with
fine stuff to the extremities. Then lay
these ends up as worming in the
grooves of the cable; put on a quarter
seizing ( ) close to each end of the
short splice; an end seizing on each
side over the pointing, and a small
seizing at each extremity over the
ends of the worming.
Uses: to splice cables.
Characteristics: Easily undone when required.
