Take the upper group (1 to 4) across
to the left (cf fig 5) and let the other
group (i to iv) be to the right, as shown
in fig 6. Then proceed on the same prin-
ciple as before, putting 4 through to the
left of iii; 3 to the left of ii; 2 & 1 to the
left of i; and so on, until the mat is
long enough. ^(see fig 1.) When the required length
has been attained, stretch another piece
of rope parallel with the first, and let
one group be on one side of it and the
other on the other. Fasten & finish off
as preferred, either by knotting the
two parts of each fox, or by half
hitching each part round the rope, or
by any other metnod. (Cf i.129.) The ends are then
to be tucked into the fabric of the mat. *
Four to eight foxes can be managed
by one man, but with more, two
men are required desirable , one of whom takes
the foxes passed through behind and
the other those in front, changing
the groups as occasion requires. In
