Reef Knot Mat
Uses: As a mat.
Characteristics: This kind of knotting
with ornamental variations is used
in macrame work. In the simple
form described above the effect is
not very ornamental, the labour
of making is considerable, and
the surface is rough. This kind of
knotting is more suitable for loose open
work such as lace and ornamental
string braids than for mats intended
to stand rough usage. In all
such a^ moderately flat surface is desirable
in order that they may wear evenly,
The figures show the knots made
loosely, but they should be made fairly
tight together. The stretching cord should
not be unnecessarily big, as it will be
eventually removed (not being required
for selvage) leaving bights. These bights will
be still bigger if the foxes are put on with
lark's head knots thus:-
