Selvagee

Other names: Salvagee Strap or Strop.
Probably Salvagee is the more correct form, since
the arrangement is intended to save the rope.

To make : Wind round rope yarn, spun yarn &c. evenly round
two pegs set up apart, or anything
else convenient & marl it ^(p 103) with spun-
yarn or finer stuff, in proportion to
the size of the band or strap made,
all the way round. (fig 1.) it is best
not to marl very tightly.
Uses : To hook on something to a
rope without knotting. It is ap
plied to an upright rope as
in fig 2. The selvagee is used
double, middled across the rope
& then crossed & re-crossed till
the two bights meet. The hook
is put through both. Used in
