Service
To make: Wind spunyarn round
tightly against the lay of the rope.
If the rope has been parcelledthis serviceof
will also be against the lay of the
parcelling (fig 1.)
On board ship two men work
the process together. One unwinds & straightens
the spunyarn from the ball or reel
while the other binds the spunyarn
as it is passed to him round the
rope to be served with the aid of a
serving mallet. The man actually
serving commences the service by taking
two or three round turns against the
lay of the rope and over the free end
of the spunyarn so as to fasten it, [??]
