127 Characteristics: The principle is that
of a simple movable
pulley a, (representing
the log) for with the
cord tied at b (re-
presenting the peg or
stump in fig 1). (That at e is for convenience only) The
rope travels, on being hauled through
twice the distance which the weight
travels and therefore , roughly speaking,
the gain of the parbuckling is to halve
the difficulty of moving the log. (cf

theory, as is well known, P = [fraction R/2] where
P = power required, & R = resistance to
