(iii) Wooden ^& cork fenders: These are [Deleted: so] flattened pieces of wood ^or cork, square
or oval in outline, & with a
wide ^meshed netting of old rope over
them. They are inelastic and
to that extent und
esirable. The
netting [Deleted: is] ^may be put on by crossing the
lines at right angles & seizing
them at the crossings instead of
using the weaver knot.
[Deleted: (iv) Cork fenders: Like no iii, but
^of cork.Used for boats. only]
Uses: To save ships & boats from
jarring against one another or
against fixed structures. Pudding fenders
are used also to prevent parts of the rigging chafing.
Characteristics: Forms of buffers.
