gun. The twist at b must be
exactly in the centre of the bot-
tom of the chase or it may
slip round.
(4) Here there are 4 bights, one of
which is round under the cas cable ^(a) ,
one over the hook, and one under
each trunnion ( b, b ). It is equivalent to
the common bale slings except that
the back bight rests, not against
the upright bight over the hook but
against the breech of the gun near a , while
the two side bights are crossed at the
top.
In nos 1-3 the slings may be longer
than figured and the strain on the
rope will then be less. A pad may
be put on the hook to save the rope
from chafing. Chains may be used
instead of ropes in the case of all
these slings.
