In this case the mast passes through

the mast &c. is difficult or impossible
tie a Tom Fook found the mast as
directed in I. p.79 & then cross the parts
a & b, converting the Tom Fool into
a Single Jury Knot. Before using
the bights a & b should be half
knotted ^(Figs 4 & 5.). This will be found quite suf
ficient to secure them from running.
A jury mast is a temporary mast,
and this knot , being a temporary
makeshift, acquires one of its names
from use in this connection.
Figs 4 & 5 show two ways of
carrying pitchers by means of this
knot. In fig 4 the half knot has
twisted to the top under strain and
the ends a, b have been tucked
under the standing parts of the
