String & spindle ^2 tubes trick.
[diagram] a & b are 2 beads
or knots at end
of string.
d & e are 2 hollow
tubes of wood, flat-
tened on inner sides
for convenience in pressing together.
The string passes down through
them by c and out at holes
near the top.
Press the tubes together &
pull a & b alternately, holding
the hand over the lower parts
of the tubes at c. The string
appears to run straight through
the spindles. Now cut with a
knife between the spindles. The
string, though apparently cut, still
runs. (A childish German trick.)
