Uses : These knots seem to have
no use in the present day, but
reference to Tschudi, [Johaan ?] Jakob von :
Peru Reiseskizzen 1838-42 (2 vols 8vo.
St Gallen 1846) vol 2. (ad fin) p 384, where
there is a woodcut of part of an
ancient quipu ?], shows these were knots
were the knots used by the Peruvians
to keep their records, a 2, 3, 5
& 7 fold knot being clearly indicated.
The knots are made as
shown in (this) fig 6 the on
cable-laid cords attached
as a fringe to a band,
and it will be noted
that the coils have also
a cable lay, which is against the
recommendation on p 5, but would as it
renders the knot easy to undo looser.
Tschudi says that (ii.385) that
numerically a simple overhand signified
10; a 2-fold 100; a 3 fold 1000 & so on.
