To indicate 20, 2 overhands would
be used ; for 200, 2 2-folds. &c. Thus
the 7-fold knot shown in his il-
lustration would have a numerical
significance of 10 x 10 x 10 [bracketed] 1000 x 10 x 10 x 10 [bracketed] 1000 x 10,
or 10 millions. Whether Tschuch is
right or wrong it is not for the
writer to decide, but it is certain
that these knots were records of
some kind, and probably they had
in many cases a numerical signi-
ficance. (See [glor??]: Primative Culture Edward B. Taylor . D.C., &c. "Researches

where, however, the woodcut Schude's
woodcut is wrongly reproduced.)

1890) p 8. says probably they indicated
