Having ended her confession, she throws the string
of knots into the fire and her sins are at that
moment forgiven her.
* Hence probably their use on the ^Franciscan
friars girdles. Such knots are sculptured
on the girdle of the recumbent figure
of a Knight man in ^chain armour over which
is a monk's friar's robe in Con(n)ington
Church, Huntingdonshire. And there are
three like this [Caption : (no 11.
p.15.)] on a cord with no
lay in it hanging as though
from the girdle of the bronze figure
of S. Francis (by Donatello .b. 1386 d 1466 )
being one of 6 figures of saints standing
above the superfrontal of the High Altar
of S. Antonio in the church of that
saint at Padua. Of this there is a
plaster cast at the V. & A. Museum, Sth
Kensington (1906.) cf. p.11.supra , cf.p. 14.
