Parting Knot.
(HNGB. Dec 1905.)
To make: In the rope ab at the end
b tie any stop knot (e.g. a two
fold), ^or fix a toggle. With the centre of the
rope cd, tie a running knot round
ab above b. Draw the latter tight
by pulling c, & bring b home to
it. To part the ropes, pull d.
Characteristics. While a & c are
strained the knot will not give,
and ^can resist a strain at right angles. a weight can be suspended
from the joined ropes.

Uses: To permit things to drop
[Deleted: over] on a spot to which there is
no access overhead; to release an
object at a particular point in a
stream, from the banks; and generally,
to release an object from inaccessible
