A convenient way of making a 4-
strand tubular or "coach-whipping" plait
is shown in figs 1-5 on p 127. It is a
method employed by girls in making
silk cords.
They use a bung with a
hole in it & pins as shown in fig 1
p 127. But ^ring, a grummet, a board with a hole in
it & 4 nails, & many equivalent other such de-
vices will serve for larger work.
Holding the bung &c. horizontally, so
that no.1 is towards the chest (fig 2
shows the appearance looking down on
it) cross no 1 over on [in pencil] to the left, ^[in pencil] of 2 &
bring no 2 across towards the chest
on the right. (fig 3.) Turn the bung
round through a quadrant . N in the
direction of the hands of a watch.
No 3 is now of towards the chest.
Cross no 3 over on the right and
bring no 4 over across towards the
chest on the left (fig 4.) Again
turn through a quadrant. The position
