In cross pointing the best effect
is produced by taking foxes of such
a thickness in proportion to the rope
that they will cover it when
taken round it at an angle of
45[degree symbol]. Theoretically this size having Of such cords
if the circ a of the rope to be pointed
= 14 diameters of the cords, take
not more than 10 cords since sin45[degree symbol]= 1/[sq root 2] = 1/1.4a
or, to put it in another way, if
the ropes circ a = 14 units, the com-
bined diameters laid straight side by side
should not exceed equal 10 units less rather
than more. Probably In practice if the dia-
meters combined amounted to rather less than 1/2
the rope's circumference of the
rope it willwould be about right.
