If it is imagined fixed as shown, then to
lay up the strands must be taken E S W N &
or "with the Sun". But if a rope is coiled
upwards; then Fig 1 opposite is "with the sun"
& coiling is against the lay, what is what one
would suspect. ? Which is
meant by coiling down.
