String and magic ball (or block) trick
The string appears to pass
straight through the block.
Really the hole has an
elbow. The foot is placed
on the end b: a is held in the hand;
when the string is slackened the block
or ball descends, but stops directly the
string is pulled taut. (The simplest way
of making the elbow is to saw the
block in half; bore a slanting hole
through one half; re-fit, mark the
second block with the gimlet passed
through the hole made; disjoin; bore
slanting hole through second half. Join
and paint the whole.)
