Seneca . Epist. 87. ad fin. (p726.ii.T. of Latin.) Trans-
lated "Gordian Knot."
This reference is wrong. It should be Pliny .^(d. A.D. 79)
xxviii. 17. (ad fin.) Vol 8. p3874 [or p38-74 ?]. B. of my ed (Valpy. 1826
sk edit. Brotier. ) & notes m , n , & o quoting
Macrobins ( Ambrosins Aurelius Theodosius)
his Saturnaliorium Convivioruser (Libri vii)
I.19.p294. Also Festus / Sextus Pomplius)
" De Verborum Signifiatione. " "Angulum "
The knot is spoken of as used in
binding up wounds & was evidently common &
well known. Macrobins ^(circ 410 A.D.) identifies it with
the knot on Mercury's rod & that (vide ante)
was sometimes a reef knot.
