"Garter Stitch"
Casting on
 : !st method. (Cf.p.108.)
Take 1 needle & make a slip knot on
the wool at a point where the tag (which
will be the non-running part) will be long
enough to form loops round the first row
of stitches. The running part will go to
the ball of wool. Pass the needle through
the slip knot.
With the end of the tag hanging
down in the L palm wind part of it
R. Handed twice round L thumb. Pass
needle under the 2 coils : Knit slack
from ball through both downwards, at
the same time slipping coils off thumb
& retaining bight of slack on needle,
forming 2nd stitch. (figs 2,3.) So continue
quant. suff. Adjust firmly but not tightly.
The 1st stitch (slip knot) is shown
in fig 1 on the R. The other 2 stitches
represent the 2nd, 3rd and all cast on
