f. Pliny tells us that some folk cured
diseases of the groin by taking a thread
from a web, tying 7 or 9 knots on it, &
then fastening it to the patients groin;
but to make sure the cure was effectual
it was necessary to name some widow as
each knot was tied.
g. Again knots may be used by an enchantress
to win a lover (see true lovers knot)
and attach him firmly to herself. Thus
the love-sick maid in Virgil seeks to
draw Daphnis to her from the city by
