The main stitch.
Having hitched on as many (half) meshes as are required, pull
out the spool & turn the line, so that the slack
st twine will
hang down on the left.
[Diagram] [Text to right of diagram] Put the thumb of the L hand over
the slack twine at X.
Pass Let the 2nd &
3rd fingers project a little downwards from
the horizontal, the 3rd being lowest, behind
the spool. Bring the slack tightly under
the 3rd finger, up behind it & the 2nd,
& lay it across just behind the top of
the spool ^(held so with left finger) & lapping over in front at X, where it is held under
the thumb. Throw the rest of the slack in a loop to the left.

a, behind spool, in front
of b (i.e. between it &
spool.) up through 1st
1/2 mesh from behind it, over
loop of slack to left, the outer
slack now being under little finger,
slip out 2nd & 3rd fingers, & pull ^down knot onto
top of spool, slipping out little finger just
before doing so.
